Becoming a Trustee

Reading Almshouse Charity relies on the dedication of our voluntary board of trustees, without whom our work would not be possible.

Trustees are volunteers, usually from the local area, who use their skills, knowledge and experience to ensure the charity is well-governed and financially sound.  Whilst not involved in day-to-day operations, trustees set the strategic direction and are responsible for ensuring the charity is carrying out the purposes for which it was set up.

The board meets quarterly, with trustees also participating in sub-committees and contributing to projects outside of meetings. For instance, trustee Carrie recently led the implementation of our new housing management system, while David took the lead on developing our new website.

If you are interested in volunteering your time and being a trustee of our charity or would like to find out more about this rewarding opportunity, please contact the office to request a new trustee information pack and application form.

What being a trustee means to some of our current board members

“One of our values is ‘we preserve and build on our legacy’ and each new trustee that joins us is doing just that – taking on a role that hundreds before them have done then adding their own contribution.   It is great to be able to use my skill sets to help others in my community and I enjoy the social aspect of getting to know residents and fellow trustees.”

“Being a trustee is a very rewarding experience which not only benefits the charity but also me as an individual. I feel I help to make a meaningful impact in ensuring the charity achieves its mission (i.e. providing more affordable housing to those in need) and generally making a positive difference in our locality.  I have also benefitted personally from being a trustee in learning many new skills about all sorts of things, including strategic planning, governance, financial oversight and much more.”

All charity trustees are expected to comply with Charity Commission’s guidance known as The Essential Trustee (CC3) please download a copy here
